Role Title: Python Developer

Role Type: Contractor (10–30 hours/week, project-based)

Location: Remote (Worldwide)

Job Summary:

In this role, you’ll apply professional Python development and code-review expertise to solve realistic engineering problems and train and evaluate AI coding systems. You’ll write reliable implementations, develop tests that define correct behaviour, and assess AI-generated code for correctness, maintainability, performance and security. You’ll also investigate bugs in existing repositories and provide structured technical feedback that reflects the judgment and standards of an experienced software engineer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Solve realistic Python engineering tasks by developing clean, reliable and maintainable implementations that meet defined functional and technical requirements.
  • Write comprehensive unit and integration tests that verify expected behaviour, cover edge cases and expose potential regressions.
  • Evaluate AI-generated Python code for functional correctness, readability, performance, maintainability, security and adherence to established engineering practices.
  • Develop reference implementations and reproducible test suites for AI coding evaluations and benchmark datasets.
  • Review code for common defects, including incorrect assumptions, inadequate error handling, type inconsistencies, concurrency issues and inefficient algorithms.
  • Reproduce, investigate and triage bugs in open-source repositories, tracing failures to their root causes and documenting verified fixes or recommended solutions.
  • Assess code changes using professional code-review standards, providing specific, actionable feedback on implementation choices and technical trade-offs.
  • Identify potential security vulnerabilities, unsafe coding patterns and reliability risks in both AI-generated and human-written Python code.
  • Document implementation decisions, test results, debugging findings and evaluation outcomes so that other engineers can reproduce and verify the work.
Areas of Expertise (we welcome applicants from any of the following):
  • Python application and backend development
  • Unit testing, integration testing and test-driven development
  • Debugging, root-cause analysis and defect triage
  • Code review and software quality assurance
  • Asynchronous programming and concurrent execution
  • Performance optimization and algorithmic efficiency
  • Python packaging, dependency management and reproducible environments
  • Secure coding practices and vulnerability identification
  • Data engineering and Python-based data processing
  • Machine learning and scientific Python libraries
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of professional Python development experience, with a track record of delivering and maintaining production code.
  • Strong command of Python fundamentals, including type hints, data structures, exception handling, decorators, iterators and context managers.
  • Practical experience with pytest, including writing meaningful assertions, parameterized tests, fixtures and tests for edge cases.
  • Familiarity with Python packaging and dependency management using tools such as pip or Poetry.
  • Working knowledge of asynchronous programming, including async/await, and the ability to reason about concurrency-related behaviour.
  • Strong Git skills and experience working with branches, commits, pull requests and collaborative code-review workflows.
  • Ability to identify correctness issues, fragile assumptions, performance bottlenecks and security weaknesses in unfamiliar code.
  • Experience debugging complex issues, reproducing defects and explaining root causes rather than simply proposing superficial fixes.
  • Excellent written and spoken English (C1 or higher), with the ability to explain technical decisions, justify review comments and communicate trade-offs clearly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and deliver well-documented outputs against asynchronous deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Contributions to open-source Python projects or experience maintaining public repositories.
  • Experience with data-processing and scientific computing libraries such as pandas and NumPy.
  • Familiarity with machine learning libraries and frameworks such as scikit-learn, PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with Docker and reproducible development or testing environments.
  • Security-focused code-review experience, including identifying injection risks, unsafe deserialization and improper handling of sensitive data.
  • Experience developing reference solutions, benchmarks or test datasets for AI coding systems.
  • Prior experience in AI code evaluation, technical annotation or expert-led software engineering assessments.
Tools and Stack:
  • Python 3, pytest, pip / Poetry, Git, Docker
Selection Process:
  • Code-review exercise: review AI-generated Python code containing deliberately introduced defects, identify and explain the issues, and provide actionable corrections in a short written technical review.
